When Shari bought the 20 acres in Malta it was acres and acres of
weeds and trees. It was not even possible to see or know that a pond
was hidden somewhere out there. After having local contractors shred
and disc the property is when the idea came to Shari to have a u-pick
berry farm. Little did Shari know that 7 years later she would be living at
the farm and the u-pick berry farm would be such a success. Garden of
Eden Farm has 3 acres of thorn less blackberries plants, 3 acres of
blueberry plants and in 2008 raspberries were added. There are many
buildings on the farm and a 20x 30 office building. The two concrete
domes are very interesting to everyone. One is for storage and the
other 25 foot diameter dome is the market for the farm where many
things are sold during the year.
Shari continually studies and does research on how to make the plants
and trees survive and prosper. Being from the city all her life, this was a
real challenge, but one she really enjoys. There was a huge learning
curve on country life and lingo she is still learning. Without the support,
expertise and kindness from the community, Garden of Eden Farm could
not exist. She appreciates everyone’s support. The farm’s schedule is
really heavy. With three kinds of berry plants with different needs and
soil and two fruit tree areas, a small garden and a large pumpkin patch in
October. There is always something to do.
If this was not enough, Shari loves to make handmade soaps, lotions
and bath products. She makes them all year and they are for sell in the
market. She uses all natural ingredients and fragrances. Shari wants
people to learn to eat healthy so she provides 6 different kinds of
preserves for her customers. The preserves are all natural, no
preservatives, and no added corn syrup. She has 2 different types of
preserves. She sells sugar and no sugar preserves. The most popular is
no sugar. It is sweetened with white grape juice and is perfect for
anyone who wants the sweet without the white sugar. It is great for
diabetics and people watching their weight. The preserves as well as all
the other products are for sell in the market all year. During u-pick
season Shari makes her special Homemade Blackberry Ice Cream. It
sells out every day.
Shari did not stop there. She loves to cook. In 2007 she published her
first cookbook, Garden of Eden Edibles. It is collection of her recipes
and those contributed from her friends in Bowie County and Houston. It
includes 250 recipes for your family and friends. A portion of the
proceeds goes to Manna Kitchen in New Boston, Texas. Manna Kitchen
is a project of the Chapel of Light Church. They cook hot meals everyday
and deliver it to people who are shut-ins. Shari feels strongly about
what they do and wants to help. Her latest cookbook was Cooking for
the Cure to help raise money for Breast cancer research. They sold 450
books in 3 months.
In 2008 Shari set up her printing and binding equipment in the office
building on the farm and published Kitchen Creations of Malta Baptist
Church. It is a beautiful cookbook with 300 recipes from the past and
present from family and friends of the congregation. She is seeking
other organizations and groups who are interested in fund raising
possibilities like publishing a cookbook, genealogy, fliers, programs or
even a personal book.
In 2008 Shari opened The Pumpkin Patch in October for school children,
groups and the public. She had over 2,000 children and parents the first
year. Not only do they get to pick a pumpkin to take home; there is a hay
ride, games, picnic tables in 3 different areas with hay bail maizes and
ice cream for all. The special surprise for the children was a story Shari
wrote called: Fred the Frog. Fred is a frog from Shari’s pond who tries to
find a friend to play with by asking everything he sees; a tree, hay bail,
the dogs, the gates, etc. In the end he finds a pumpkin that talks and
wants to play, the pumpkin’s name is Pammy the Pumpkin. The children
all received a coloring book, Shari created and published the coloring
book. All the children and parents had a great time. She will be adding
more events to The Pumpkin Patch each year.
One of Shari's passions from her past was training and teaching young
girls for fashion shows and pageants. She designs pageant dresses and
also wedding dresses. She is now working with local teenagers and
making fashions. Shari can go wherever the bride is for consultations
and fittings. Her designs are one of a kind.
With everything to do on the farm, Shari still finds time to substitute in
the elementary schools. With an Elementary Education degree and a
Master’s degree in Mid-management Administration she likes to provide
learning situations for the children. Her love for children and people
keeps her reaching for more ideas for learning and enjoyment. Come by
and visit Shari’s Garden of Eden Farm. Have a seat and stay a while!
In 2008, Shari expanded her publishing from Houston to Malta and
surrounding areas. She now has Shari Parker Publishing and
Printing at Garden of Eden Farm. All the blackberry and blueberry
plants were given away and she stays really busy publishing and
printing and still has time for wedding dresses and quilts.
Planting my herb garden. I love playing in the dirt.
