Garden of Eden Farm
So many people asked about our concrete dome and how we made it, I
thought I would share the experience. It is our market where we sell
our products, weigh the berries and check out the customers. We
heard there was an F-5 tornado in DeKalb and we wanted something
permanent.
We started with a circular slab with rebar at every 12" around.
Steel pipes were assembled in specific lengths to create the 5/8
dome. Rebar was then connected to the slab and brought to the top
over the pipe structure. All connecting rebar was wired together.
Metal mesh was wired to the rebar. Then the steel pipe structure
was removed, leaving the rebar and mesh.
We hired a shot create specialist to blow cement onto the dome. It
eventually ended up being 6"to 8" thick instead of 2" to 3" thick. We
painted the dome to seal it once with beige and it turned out yellow.
Then we coated it with reflective coating to seal it and now it is
white. We did all the electrical wiring, lighting and painting inside
the dome. We worked on weekends and holidays because we were
still living in Houston. It took nine months. It is cooled by air
conditioners and heated by a wood burning stove. The dome will be
there many years after we are gone.
Come visit and get the real feel of being in a safe concrete dome.
